Animal Control

The Shire's local Ranger, Michele should be contacted on 0419 867 317 for the following:

  • Reporting dog or cat issues including stray/wandering animals, nuisance animals or attacks;
  • Reporting your animal missing as it may have been reported or held in the pound;
  • Any other animal related matters.

The Shire also employs the services of WA Contract Ranger Services who are in town on a fortnightly basis to assist the Shires local Ranger.  They can be contacted on mobile: 0459 678 154.

Complaints

All complaints are required to be made in writing.

Dogs

The Shire has three designated dog exercise areas where dogs are permitted to be unleashed as long as they are able to be controlled by command. These areas include:

Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times outside of these permitted areas, penalties apply.

Keeping of dogs is governed by the Dog Act 1976, with the following information important for all dog owners:

  1. All dogs over the age of 3 months are required to be registered with the local government within which they are normally housed;
  2. All dogs over 3 months of age must be micro-chipped;
  3. Whilst owners are able to choose any approved company to undertake the micro chipping, locally WA Contract Ranger Services can undertake micro-chipping when in town, with bookings made via Shire. Merredin Veterinary Services can also undertake micro chipping during their monthly visits, bookings made direct;
  4. If you believe your dog is too old or ill to have a microchip, you require an exemption certificate from a veterinarian;
  5. If your dog has passed away, please contact the shire to advise of this so we can update our records;
  6. Failure to microchip or register your dog is an offence, and penalties apply;
  7. Unless approved otherwise by Council, the maximum number of dogs permitted to be kept on any premises is two (2) over the age of three (3) months, and the young of those dogs up to 3 months of age.
  8. Refunds on registrations will be paid where:
    1. A dog is sterilised after renewal of the registration, in which case the difference in the licence fee will be refunded. Evidence of sterilisation must be produced.
    2. Where a person has paid for a 3 year or Life registration and subsequently becomes a pensioner the Shire will refund the difference in fees. Pensioner Concession card must be produced and type of pension valid.
  9. Evidence of sterilisation may include, certificate from vet, sighting by staff of ear tattoo or Statutory Declaration.

Cats

The keeping of cats is governed by the Cat Act 2011, with the following information important for Cat owners:

  1. All cats over 6 months of age must be registered, micro-chipped and sterilised unless the owner holds a breeders licence.
  2. Whilst owners are able to choose any approved company to undertake the micro chipping, locally WA Contract Ranger Services can undertake micro-chipping when in town, with bookings made via Shire and Merredin Veterinary Services can also undertake micro chipping during their monthly visits, bookings made direct.
  3. If you believe your cat is too old or ill to have a microchip, you require an exemption certificate from a veterinarian.
